< helpConfiguring your external domain for creating short links in Clickug

Try it now!
The Branded Short Domain is the domain that takes the place of "click.ug" or any other of the domains proposed by Clickug in a shortened URL. To start using a Branded Short Domain, follow these steps.

What if I can't make these changes?
Don't worry. If this seems too complicated, you can buy now a new domain for your profile or short links. This has the advantage that we take care of all the technical configurations (DNS) so you can start using it without having to worry about anything. It only takes 5 minutes. To purchase your domain now visit: https://clickug.com/branded-short-links

Very important!

Clickug recommends that the domain you use to create your short links and your website are different. For example, if your website is www.yoursite.com, your short links could use the domain yoursite.link. If you use your web domain for short links, your website links will not work without "www" as this is the domain used for your short links (e.g. http://yourwebsite.com). Use a different domain for your short links. Thus, the URLs of your website can continue to function with or without "www" and the short links also will work with or without "www".

Once you have added your branded domain in your account (https://clickug.com/settings/domains), to start using it to create custom short links, you need to log in to your domain's registar and add the following DNS records to the DNS zone:

NOTE: In all cases, if there is already an A / CNAME record for the same host, replace it with the data below.

Main record

Name/Host: @
TTL: 43200 (or 12 hours)
Record type: A
Value/Points to IP: 54.214.33.180

Here is an example of correct DNS settings:

OPTIONAL: Note 1: If you want to create custom links with the customization before the domain (ex: visit.newyork.com) add the following record:
Name/Host: *
TTL: 43200 (or 12 hours)
Record type: CNAME
Value/Points to: @

Here is an example of correct DNS settings:

OPTIONAL: Note 2: if you want short links to also work on www.[yourbrandeddomain] (this is incompatible with Note 3), add the following record:
Name/Host: www
TTL: 43200 (or 12 hours)
Record type: CNAME
Value/Points to: @

OPTIONAL: Note 3: if you also want to keep using www.[yourbrandeddomain] as your website (this is incompatible with Note 2), add the following record in the case it doesn't exist, and in the case it exist edit it. If there is a CNAME entry with www host you should delete it.
ATTENTION!: In this case, your web URL will not work without the "www." If you do not want this to happen you must use a different domain for your short links.
Name/Host: www
TTL: 43200 (or 12 hours)
Record type: A
Value/Points to IP: [IP of your website's server]

Ownership verification record

This ensures that you are the actual owner of this domain and prevents others from making use of it to create short links.
Name/Host: @
TTL: 86400 (or 24 hours)
Record type: TXT
Value/Points to: clickug-verification=[replace-by-the-code-we-send-you-by-email]

Here is an example of correct DNS settings:

Note to use a subdomain as a branded domain

In the case that your branded domain is a sub-domain of your main domain, use the sub-domain's name instead of "@" in the records.

Troubleshooting

Do I need to change the nameservers for my domain?
Nope. A records and CNAME records are different from nameservers (such as ns1.godaddy.com), which Clickug does not provide. If you are being asked to enter a nameserver, please use the one provided by your registrar, which should allow you to set an A record and/or CNAME from within your registrar’s dashboard.

How do I know if I set up my domain properly?
You will receive a confirmation email when you can start creating short links. It can take up to 48 hours for domain changes to propagate.

If you have followed the instructions but your custom domain still isn’t working, remember:
- You must wait up to 72 hours since you modify DNS.
- Log in to your registrar's web site and verify the A and/or CNAME records(s) you entered match the instructions above.
- Go to https://clickug.com/settings/domains and look in the list if the configuration data match the one you used?
- Some registrars require that the A/CNAME/TXT hostname and value ends with a dot (.). Try changing the values of those records from subdomain.domain.com to subdomain.domain.com. (note the final dot).
